A Bit About Derwent
I’m Rebecca Watson, Design & Social Media Specialist at The Cumberland Pencil Company. The company has a long and distinguished history of pencil making in the United Kingdom. Legend has it that in the early 1500s, a dramatic storm in Borrowdale, Cumberland, uprooted a tree unearthing a black material now known as graphite. Originally, shepherds would use graphite to mark their sheep but it was soon discovered it could be used to draw with.
Starting out as a cottage industry, the UK’s first pencil factory opened in 1832. Since then, The Cumberland Pencil Company has developed a wide range of artists’ materials which are distributed to over 70 countries worldwide. Manufacturing remained in Keswick until 2008 when a new factory was built in nearby Workington.

Our core brand is Derwent; a name recognised worldwide. We produce fantastic Graphic pencils for sketching, innovative Inktense pencils for painting and XL blocks for large scale expressive marks.
We also produce a fantastic selection of coloured pencils. Coloursoft is the UK’s softest brand of coloured pencil and are wonderfully easy to blend. Artists pencils are a traditional coloured pencil with a firm core; perfect for sharpening to a fine point for detailed subjects.
